Sandra Oh is the daughter of Joon-Soo (John) and Young-Nam. Her parents migrated from Korea to Canada in early 1960’s. Her father owns a business and her mother is a biochemist. She was brought up in Ottawa.
She attended Sir Robert Borden High School, where she was a student council president. At this school, she started working for environment protection and founded an environmental club named BASE, which campaigned against the use of styrofoam cups.
She had started learning ballet dance and acting when she was quite young. At school, she continued to learn these arts besides, playing flute during her studies. She later attended the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. While she was studying there, she appeared in a TV movie ‘School’s Out’ as a waitress.
Sandra started her career with a stage appearance in ‘Oleanna’ after completing her graduation from National Theatre School. She then appeared in ‘The Dairy of Evelyn Lau’ and later appeared in the lead role in ‘Double Happiness’ (Canadian film), which gave her recognition as an actress. She appeared in some more Canadian films like Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity and ‘Last Night’.
Sandra has acted in the films like ‘Bean’, ‘Permanent Midnight’, ‘The Red Violin’ and ‘Bad Day on the Block’ in 1990’s. She acted for some more films from 2000 onwards; some of them are ‘Waking the Dead’, ‘The Princess Diaries’, ‘Full Frontal’, ‘Rick’, ‘Sideways’, ‘Hard Candy’, ‘Cake’, ‘The Night Listener’, ‘For Your Consideration’ and ‘Blindness’. She will be seen in the movie ‘Defender’ in 2009.
Sandra has also been active on the television playing roles in ‘Degrassi High: School’s Out’, ‘Cagney and Lacey: The View Through the Glass Ceiling’, ‘Popular’, ‘Date Squad’, ‘Six Feet Under’, ‘Further Tales of the City’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and a few other shows. She got much appraisal for her roles in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Arli$$’.
Sandra married Alexander Payne on 1 January 2003 after three years of courtship and they divorced in 2006.
Sandra hosted the 2008 Genie Awards. She herself has won the Golden Globe Award in 2006 for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.
Sandra was nominated for the Emmy Award for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ from 2005 to 2008.
She was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in 2006 and 2008 and she won it in 2007. She also won the same award in 2006 for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and in 2005 for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for ‘Sideways’.
Sandra has been nominated for numerous other awards until now and she has won many of them.
